What a modern service website should actually do

Web strategy ยท 2 min read

Explain your offer, build trust, capture intent and make the next step obvious. Everything else is decoration.

Start with the visitor's question

Someone lands on your site with one question in mind: can this company solve my problem? Most service websites answer a different one. They talk about history, values and awards before they say what the company does and who it does it for.

A useful test is to show your home page to a stranger for five seconds. If they cannot tell you what you sell and what to do next, the page is not doing its job, however good it looks.

Four jobs, in order

First, explain the offer in plain words. Second, give a reason to believe it: named clients, real project photos, clear process, licences and credentials. Third, capture intent with a short form, a phone number that works and a booking link. Fourth, make the next step obvious on every page, not only on Contact.

Speed and mobile layout sit underneath all four. Many service enquiries now begin on a phone, and a slow page loses visitors before the headline appears.

Measure enquiries, not visits

Traffic is a vanity number unless it turns into conversations. Set up tracking for form submissions, calls and bookings, then review which pages produce them. The pages that convert tell you what your buyers care about. Build more of those and prune the rest.
